Why the 2026 festival was canceled
In its Sept. 2 statement, the board said it had been talking with the city since April 2026 about the city’s decision to move the festival off Front Street. The board said the layout offered at Brunswick and Nutt streets did not work:
- Vendor access: too few entry points for standard delivery vehicles.
- Competing events: a Home Show at the Wilmington Convention Center and a four-day production at the Wilson Center were set for the same time.
- Traffic: keeping major intersections open during a festival of Riverfest’s size, the board said, would cause gridlock.
The board said the city approved the most limited of its alternate layouts on Aug. 31, too late to plan around. Board President Roderick Bell called the cancellation “a strategic pivot that honors both our community and our vendors.”
Vendors and sponsors get full refunds for 2026, with priority booking for 2027. The board says a workable site must be agreed by July 1, 2027, at the latest, and it is asking residents to tell city leaders they want the festival back.
What Riverfest is
Riverfest was founded in 1979 by Gene Merritt and DARE Inc. to bring people back downtown and show off the Cape Fear River. The first one drew 10,000 people to street fairs and raft races. Organizers say the festival now draws about 100,000 people a year, with more than 130 vendor booths and 10 main stage acts, and the 45th festival in 2024 drew more than 110,000. They put its economic impact at $13 million.
It is a free street fair along the historic downtown riverfront. The program on the festival’s site has included:
- an arts and crafts street fair and food vendors
- live music on the main stage
- a block party
- a drone show
- a BMX bike show
- an antique car display
- the Riverfest Pageant
Volunteer shifts help fund marine science scholarships and support Cape Fear River Watch, organizers say.
What to know when it returns
- Pets: not allowed. A city ordinance, quoted on the Riverfest About page, makes it unlawful to bring an animal, leashed or not, into Riverfest, the Azalea Festival or any street closed for a special event.
- Road closures and parking: will depend on the 2027 site. We will post the closures and parking here once the city and organizers publish them. Our getting around guide lists the downtown parking decks.
- Updates: sign up on the Riverfest website. The board has promised quarterly updates on the venue talks to vendors and sponsors.
